Values and Ethos

Welcome to Queen Mary’s Grammar School

I am delighted to welcome you to Queen Mary’s Grammar School, more affectionately known as QMGS. QMGS is an Ofsted outstanding selective boys’ school which is co-educational in the 6th form and has 1090 pupils on roll. It is one of the oldest schools in the country, founded in 1554 in Walsall, an industrial town eight miles north of Birmingham. In 2018, QMGS became a founder member of the Mercian multi-academy trust along with four other Walsall schools, following single academy conversion in 2011. The four pillars of QMGS are ‘Academic in Purpose’, ‘International in Outlook’, ‘Generous in Approach’ and ‘Enterprising in Spirit’, and life at the school reflects these characteristics equally, along with adherence to the QMGS Pastoral Charter. In 2018, 67% of all GCSE entries were graded at A/A* or 7-9 and at A-Level, 70% of grades were A*-B, with most of the sixth-form going on to higher education. As well as academic excellence, we offer a wide range of co-curricular opportunities.  The school is part of the IOE’s Mandarin Excellence Programme and has been named as one of the top 100 secondary schools for cricket in the UK by the Cricketer magazine.  Outside the classroom, we own a field centre in Wales (Farchynys), have one of the UK’s largest Combined Cadet Forces and travel as far afield as the USA and Borneo.  The Horizon near-space programme has set new standards of what is possible for school-age students to achieve and we offer a multitude of other clubs, societies and opportunities. The school also engages in regular fundraising, food bank drives, and visits to other local organisations, such as schools and care homes. We have gained national attention for our focus on mental health and the school community is a huge strength, summed up in our motto: ‘Quas dederis solas semper habebis opes’; It is what you give that you will keep as eternal riches. I hope you find the website useful and I encourage you to explore our twitter accounts for a glimpse of daily life.
